This is the first blog entry for Elmfield Farm Cottages – I hope it will keep you up to date with the coming and goings of the animals, and the fun we are having trying to get the hang of running a couple of self catering cottages and making our smallholding work. After a year here we still feel like we are still on the steep bit of the learning curve.
It was the start of August when we won 6 eggs in an eBay auction. We already had a dozen chickens but thought a few more hens would up the egg production and big fluffy brown hens would look nice running round the farmyard. The 3 chicks that hatched have just been let out to run free for the first time today with the other chickens and ducks. I am busy playing mother hen and flapping every-time they disappear out of sight. Of course true to form they only roam as far as the nearest bit of food where they stop and eat.
These chickens are supposed to be very popular – another business idea perhaps we could try breeding them. Mind you I think we are going to need more than 3 birds (especially when it is 2 boys and only one girl!).
